What is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. They can appear in different parts of the body.

Common Types of Hernia

  • Inguinal Hernia — most common, occurs in the groin area
  • Umbilical Hernia — near the belly button
  • Hiatal Hernia — part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm
  • Incisional Hernia — at a previous surgical incision site

Symptoms

  • A visible bulge under the skin
  • Pain or discomfort, especially when bending, coughing or lifting
  • Feeling of heaviness or weakness in the abdomen

Treatment Options

Small hernias may be monitored, but most require surgical repair. Laparoscopic hernia repair is preferred for its minimal scarring and faster recovery.
